This document outlines the connections between the seven main goals for the new ELA & Literacy Common Core State Standards and the classroom practice known as Socratic Seminar. This is a wonderful resource for teachers to justify their use of dialogue in the classroom as a means to get students to think and work better together. Socratic Seminars are perfect for critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and the four basic communication forms: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been working with students ever since I was a senior in high school in 1988 when I volunteered in a Kindergarten classroom. Since then, I have worked with a variety of students in numerous settings, including: gifted & talented students at College Academy and M.A.G.I.C., special needs students at Camp Northwood, rural students in Maine, inner-city students in Atlanta, and public and private school students in Massachusetts. I worked for 11 years at Sparhawk School, where I taught math, social studies, language arts, Socratic Seminar, and numerous elective classes to students in grades 4-12; mentored numerous teachers; was the Middle School Director for many years; and even served as Acting Headmaster for five months. I am now an education Consultant and can be contacted for professional development workshops, in-services, teacher coaching and much more. Visit my website for more: www.CharlesAmesFischer.com
