This is a pair of earth science lessons that I have used with third grade. However, these lessons would also be appropriate for grades 4 and 5. The lessons combine teaching students about using an index with teaching them about plants and soil. The lessons could be used back to back or at totally different times. The index lesson could be used at any time during the year that you wanted to refresh this skill. Both lessons also offer opportunities for student participation.
