Working with word families is an effective way to get kids reading and help them learn to decode longer words.
This book of spelling lists combines word families and spelling patterns that are important for children to learn in order to become lifelong spellers and readers.

Kids also learn to apply the skills they have learned to new words. These lists introduce a pattern and 5 words that follow that pattern. Children are asked to practice these and be ready to write 5 new words that follow the same pattern.

High frequency words are also introduced each week and are added to a word bank at the bottom of the list.

Later in the year, students are asked to 3 additional high frequency words from previous weeks.

Book includes:
32 spelling lists for students
32 teacher lists with extra words and dictation sentences
3 different spelling test papers -15, 18, & 20 words
1 dictation sentence page for test day
List of Spelling tips that you can share with parents
This book is packed with 32 spelling lists...enough for an entire year...and will have them on their way to becoming awesome spellers...and readers!!

Thanks!
Hilary Lewis

I am very interested in purchasing this but have a few questions!! We use the Treasures reading series, would I just do away with the spelling from that series or try to tie that plus this together? Thanks.

I just did away with the spelling from our series. However I did follow the spelling patterns that I was teaching that week. You could switch the weeks around so that it would coincide with when you are teaching certain skills. Does that make any sense?
Hope that helped. Just let me know if there's anything else I can help you with!
Thank you!

We use Rigby literacy by design... Do you like Scott Foresman? We are getting ready to adopt a new series. Thank you!

Hi Hilary,

I LOVE your unit! I cannot wait to use it this year! However, I purchased and downloaded your unit, but it does not include the 3 different spelling test papers -15, 18, & 20 words,1 dictation sentence page for test day, and list of Spelling tips that you can share with parents. I have downloaded it three times, and the pages only have the design on the top and bottom, along with the corner grading box.

Please help! Thank you!

Are you opening the document in 'Preview' on your Mac? If you are, then open it with the Adobe program, not preview. You should also be able to print from a Windows machine. That should get you all fixed up.

Hilary,
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your unit! I cannot wait to use it next year. I do have the following questions though:
*is each spelling word worth 1 point?
*is each word in the dictation worth one point?
*do you count the capital at the beginning as an additional point and the endmark as
another point in the dictation sentence?
*do you grade or give points for the spelling practice tips?

Just one more question.....Can you tell I am quite literal?! UGH! LOL!

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Dawn,
You are cracking me up! Let's go through the list...
*yes, each word is 1 point
*I use 15 points for the dictation no matter how many words there are...I used to count the words, but now I just use 15.
*The capital and period/? are each worth a point
*I grade them and then the kids keep track of their scores on one of the data graphs that I have (you can get those free on here)
*Yes, I can tell you are quite literal! :)
Hope this helps!

I've been asked before, but I'm not sure of the words to use. I may tackle it this summer. :)

I used high frequency words from our reading series (Rigby Literacy by Design) & some Fry's words & some that I know are trouble words.

Hilary,

I LOVE what you have put together in Spelling Lists That Make Sense For First Grade, but no matter what I do I cannot get it to print. My Adobe is up to date, but I cannot get it to print. Do you have any suggestions that I could try? I have tried different printers as well.

Thank you for your time and great ideas!

Hi there,
I'm sorry you are having trouble. Have you contacted Teachers Pay Teachers? They will probably be able to help you out better than I can. Are you opening the document in 'Preview' on a Mac? If you are, then open it with the Adobe program, not preview. You should also be able to print from a Windows machine. Let me know! Sorry!

I love these lists! Unfortunately, LIST 14 has the -ill and -ell spelling pattern, but has the list 13 spelling words repeated. This is clearly an error. I purchased the packet. I am not looking forward to trying to edit this. It is a pdf. Is there any way you can forward me the corrected list?

Thank you so much for letting me know! I am so sorry that you had to deal with that. I fixed the file and it has been re-downloaded. You should be receiving an email about it. Just download it again! Let me know if you have any other issues!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for 25 years. I have taught kindergarten and 1st grade...then began to loop with 2nd and 3rd graders. I absolutely loved looping! It was so exciting to watch the growth in those little buggers over a two year period....and talk about getting attached! Those little people, their families and I became very close. We stopped looping a few years ago when we changed principals. I'm trying to talk my new principal into letting me team teach with a friend....we just want to knock out one of the walls!
