Thank you so much for your wonderful program. I do have one question, which I'm sure you've been asked before...sorry.
I have had no problem downloading and printing any of the resources except for the two parent guide pages. Is there a certain application that I need to be using? I get the header, the little examples, and the bold words, but nothing in between. Help?

Thanks in advance, Leigh

Hello and thanks for all of your wonderful work. I saw on your blog that you have a third grade class that is way low and you are having to start the year with kids in /g/, /h/, /i/ books. I just started school this week and I am noticing that I have many kids who are struggling to read anywhere near a third grade level. I purchased your unit last month. Now I am wondering if I am biting off more than I can chew. Looking at starting the year with the blends I am thinking I may have to start the year with a review of the simple short and long vowel words! Since you have the same kind of class, are you modifying your word study unit in any way to reflect the kids in your class? I enjoy your blog!!!

I am so glad you like the blog! That means a lot! Right now, I am sticking with the lists I have. It is just way too much work to switch everything up. I am working on those short and long vowels with my low kiddos in small groups during reading workshop time because it goes right along with sounding out words in their reading. These low kiddos are also on the preprimmer list for high frequency words so they are getting words on their level each week. I don't think it will hurt them to be exposed to both word families, as the list a and b words are really memorization any way. I think it will help them move forward because I am really focusing on the words they need in reading. I hope that helps!

I just purchased your word study unit and wanted to make some changes to the parent letter. After downloading and saving, I am still not able to delete and type my own words on the page. is there any way to do this? Also, you referred to literary practice throughout the week. Do you have some of those practice ideas available, like word sorts, etc. ? Thank you-

I will email you an editable parent letter!
Monday: pretest and High frequency word identification
Tuesday: We highlight the word families and try to come up with our own
Wednesday: We either search through books for other words that belong to the word family, or we complete a spelling activity like rainbow spelling, pyramid spelling, write the words in a sentence, etc. anything that allows practice of the word
Thursday: complete a spelling activity like Wednesday or take a practice test with a partner asking us the words
Friday: Test

Hi Teacher Chick! I can't thank you enough for putting this altogether. It is awesome. I have a load of questions that I hope you can answer.
1. The word "Planet" in Unit 2B Challenge Words is capitalized. Can you fix? (It is not capitalized on the free download version.)
2. I see someone alerted you to the errors on Unit 14's List B (#8,9,10). Did you get the chance to fix these? If so, can you send me the corrected version?
3. Beth Newingham shows a sample of a weekly letter she sends home each week describing the spelling pattern for the week. Do you do that as well?
4. When you begin assessing the children on the HFW, you mention that you start children on different lists due to past records. Although differentiating would be great, I fear that I might be passing by some key words if I start the student too high. What do you think about that?
4. Many of Beth's incredibly fabulous pages on Scholastic are no longer there/accessible. I don't know why. Do you?
5. What is your P.I.R.A.T.E. binder???
6. Do you give out the whole packet and the beginning of the year?
7. Where did you get your scope and sequence? F&P? Words Their Way? I want to check out the key concepts for each unit to be sure that I am teaching it correctly?
8. Finally, do these concepts match the expectations for 3rd graders in the Common Core?
Sorry, for so many questions! I look forward to hearing from you!

I am so glad you like it!
1. I will change it!
2. yes, everything is fixed on the updated version.
3. no, we don't do spelling HW, kids have to practice on their own if our work at school is not enough
4. I start with the beginning preprimer list for the HFW for my low kiddos, words like: at, the, dog, etc.
5. It is our nightly notebook where they store their assignment notebook, spelling words for the entire year, and vocabulary words
6. yes
7. It is a mixture of all that you mentioned and Beth Newingham's lists
8. yes =)

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, please ask! teacherchicksblog@yahoo.com

Hi there, I was wondering if you would think about adding a rockstar/hollywood theme clip art on another listing for these lists. I know it is a popular classroom theme this year with a lot of teachers. I would love that!

Hi Teacher Chick,
I downloaded your Word study. It looks fabulous! When I download the teacher word list set, the formatting on the pages is not correct. It has some lists starting in the middle of the pages where other left off along with the black corners of pages in the middle. Not sure what is causing this. Could maybe you email it separately to see if that may fix the problem. I also didn't get the parent letter and don't see where you can download it separately. Thank you

Hi Teacher Chick...SKenley again. I was able to get the parent letter after purchasing your Word Study unit, but now I have another issue! I have tried going on Beth Newingham's site to get the High Frequency Word Lists, but they don't seem to be available. When you click on the lists, it kicks you back to the Scholastic Website. Is there anyway you could email me those lists and the recording sheets when we test kids on those? Thanks so much!

I was freaking out when you said that because I was missing some lists and was going to have to go back and redownload them! I went to the site and you can get them. It does take you to a weird scholastic advertisement, but when you click skip this ad, it downloads. I don't know what that is all about. Let me know if it doesn't work for you. teacherchicksblog@yahoo.com

Wow, thank you! I have been following Beth Newingham and wanting to implement the Word Study portion, but didn't have time to develop all the lists! So glad you have posted this for purchase! By any chance have you developed a "homework" portion that goes with these lists?

Thank you!

I'm looking over your spelling word unit and I have a lot of questions. How do you decide which high-frequency words students get? How do you give the actual tests? Also do you have anything to explain this system to parents because it is very different from most spelling tests? Do you use the same test format with your ELL students? Thank you!

Hello! Have you downloaded the free preview file? That contains the letter to the parents that explains the entire program. For high frequency: We spend the first week or two taking high frequency word tests as a class. We check them together and students highlight all the words they got correct on their master list. The one's not highlighted, are the their new HF words for each week. I also use words from their writing that they spell incorrectly. I am going to revise this file and explain the high frequency lists. Be on the lookout for an email that says I have revised the file and you can redownload it.

Hi! I think your unit looks fabulous! Just a few questions because I am a bit confused about the list words.
(1) The "final test words" in the "preview pages" are the same for unit 1 and unit 2.
(2) All the kids take the same pretest. 90% and up get "challenge study words" to be studied at home? Below 90% they get "test-study words" to be studied at home? For the final test you said they have their words plus 5 unknown words that follow the pattern and their own personal 5 high frequency words. Do both groups get the same 5 unknown words? Also, the list of "final test words" aren't words from either list?
(3) Does your unit include the weekly activities for each unit.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Natalie,
You should see a list of spelling words for the kids to take home and a list for the teacher that has the pretest and final words. I hope that is what you are talking about in question 1...
Question 2 yes to everything. I will be choosing 5 words from the list of 10 on the final test portion of the teacher page.
Question 3. Sadly I do not have any activities yet... I hope to start this year. I hope this helps!!
