A low-key way of having students improve their spelling is to have them use a log of misspelled words as they are reading and writing about a short story or a novel, or when they are working on compositions or essays.
Here is a log that students seem to like to use. It gives a positive spin on the errors by using a bit of humor as they blame the errors on their pencils.

Thanks so much for the freebie. Very clever! I had created a sheet with the same idea, but this one is SO much better. I'll definitely be using this for our very next writing piece.

I really like the unique slant of this activity. "He did it, she did it!" is right up a kid's allley. The poor pencil must really feel hard done by having to rewrite the words so many times!! Great spelling practice! :)
