Here are 36 spelling activities arranged in four grids of nine activities each to make a Tic-Tac-Toe format. These can be used with any spelling list and are great for differentiated spelling programs. They are also great for saving on copying as most of the activities are done on notebook paper.
If you rotate the grids, students will have different choices every week for four weeks. Another option is to use these every so often to break up a more regimented spelling program.
The Tic-Tac-Toe format forces students to make choices, weighing one activity against another. Because the activities chosen must be in a row, a student may very well find that in order to choose the assignment he most wants, he must also complete an assignment that he will find more challenging. However, that more challenging activity is likely to be met with less resistance than if there was no choice and no more motivating activity to go with it.
These are offered in both PDF and Word format so that you can edit as needed. Zip files should open automatically when you download. These will print out fine whether in color or grayscale.

My passion is creating high quality, ready-to-use teaching resources. I believe our future depends on our children being able to think creatively and critically, so I incorporate higher level thinking skills into almost everything I create.
Most of my experience is in gifted education grades 1-4. But I have also taught regular education to all elementary grade levels. I've taught workshops on writing and have had extensive experience teaching elementary science as well as technology.
I have also written a series of 6 creative and critical thinking books for Evan-Moor as well as several other books of teacher materials.
In addition, I am a published author of over 100 nonfiction books for children on a variety of subjects.
You can see the books I've written here:
