This lesson addresses the controversial "i before e except after c except when it sounds like a as in neighbor and weigh" spelling rule. While I agree that the rule is largely unnecessary since there are many more exceptions to it than not, I wrote this lesson anyway because my students requested it. They were not scoring as well on the spelling questions on our county tests and they said it was ie and ei words that confused them.

The lesson is entirely presented in this power point. I have a cartoon and a poem to open the lesson, followed by a chart with examples for the rule and some exceptions. The students are then asked to go though a sorting exercise. The final slide provides a couple of links to online quizzes or reviews using ie and ei words.
