In this free experiment activity, students will take a Potions Test to see if they are a wizard! The activity is an experiment to observe the chemical reaction created by combining vinegar and baking soda, although students are not told the common names of the ingredients until after the experiment is completed. To create a "wizardly" or "mad scientist" atmosphere, 4 pages of labels are included using the "scientific" names of common items ("Dihydrogen monoxide" = water, "Acetic acid" = vinegar, etc.) Also included are 2 pages of notes for the teacher and 2 printable student sheets, including activity instructions and an article on the science behind the experiment. This is a fun, easy activity for Halloween or as an introduction or extension to a Harry Potter unit. It requires simple household ingredients (water, vinegar, baking soda, and food coloring) and can be completed in less than 30 minutes. by Rebecca Bettis

I am a third grade teacher and used this experiment on Halloween. It was fantastic! You did such a great job creating the labels and explaining the activity. The look on my kids' faces was priceless when they thought they were wizards! Thank you so much for sharing. I HIGHLY recommend this activity!

Oddball Science (TpT Seller)
A fun chemistry experiment in the style of a potions lesson! If you use universal indicator (like red cabbage juice) instead of a dye you can show a colour change when the acid is neutralised.
