Want a creative way to know if your students understood the book they just read? Use this Story Elements Bookmark as a way for them to tell you what happened in the story. Copy the pages front/back and cut down the middle. Then, allow students to use their independent reading or guided reading. Used with real students in the classroom of Heidi Raki.

I currently teach first grade at an American School in Casablanca, Morocco. Previously, I taught all grade levels in the computer lab at a Title I school in Georgia. I have also taught 3rd grade for 4 years. I student-taught in 3rd grade and Kindergartden. I have taught both high income and low-income school students, and find that no matter where I teach, most kids need to look at every problem from 12 different angles. Although it is challenging, it is also incredibly rewarding.
