When a required reading was assigned for any of my classes, many students failed to do the assignment and came unprepared to learn. Since it was essential that every student was prepared, I created an article summary to be completed for each assigned reading. Because the summary card was required, it forced the students to read or at least scan the reading.
The summary is done on 5 inch x 8 inch file cards so there is not a great deal of writing for the student. Because a rubric is already developed, grading is quick and easy for the teacher. The five page handout consists of detailed directions, the ten point grading rubric, a sample of the back and front of a summary note card, and a detailed overview of Bloom's Taxonomy with sample questions for each level of Bloom's.
This is appropriate for high school or college level courses.

I have been teaching since "the earth cooled". My husband is a teacher as well, and together we have over 75 years of teaching in the elementary, middle school, high school and college areas. My focus is mathematics while my husband's is science. We never want to do anything else because we love it! My teaching style is hands-on and energetic while using diverse teaching strategies.
