Summer Camp in the Classroom is a simulation in which you transform your classroom into a campground. It has many computer related and non-computer related activities.
Students will work with team mates to select a campsite and map a route. They will participate as a team in learning about:local wildlife; fishing regulations; constellations; campfire cooking; plant, insect, weather, and water safety; using an obstacle course.
Campers will keep logs and scrapbooks while engaging in reading, writing and communication activities.
Many language, science and math activities have been incorporated into this cross-curricular webquest. It can be as long or as short as the teacher wishes and students of any age can take part. If the group is multi-age, older students can work with younger ones just as they would in any camp setting. Involvement, cooperation and participation are key words.
This lesson contains objectives, suggested materials, assessments, and websites as well as detailed lesson plans and procedures with original ideas. Visor, Camp Log cover and log entry sample are included.

Absolutely! You can use the resources in this package to make the lessons last as long or as short a time as you wish. Many of the websites include other ideas and links.
In addition, using print resources, such as related books and magazines for your students, will extend their knowledge. If you have access to computers or tablets with Internet connections, your students can do many online activities alone or in their camping groups.

VaReane has taught grades kindergarten through eight over the last thirty years. She has been on many district and building committees and scores local fluency and writing assessments. In addition, VaReane has served as a facilitator at the Educational Service Unit and trained teachers in technology instruction since 1996. She presents at the Nebraska Educational Technology Convention each year and has developed many lessons integrating technology which she uses with students during the school year and summer classes. In addition, VaReane has published many ideas and articles with education magazines and websites.
