The highest court in our nation, the Supreme Court, has more power than some people
realize. The nine justices make decisions that affect the entire country, but yet many
people do not know how the Supreme Court functions nor the impact of its decisions.
“Supreme Court Newspaper” provides students the opportunity to learn about the
Supreme Court before uncovering a specific case in depth. When students have completed
this unit, they will understand the impact of the Supreme Court’s decisions on their lives,
the lives of their friends and family, and the lives of citizens of the United States.
Following a teacher-directed lesson on the Supreme Court, students delve into a case of
their choosing. By completing the newspaper, students translate their research into a
readable document for the “general public.” Once their newspaper is complete, they will
share their information with their classmates.
