This is a ready-to-use, 27 PAGE PACKET designed for teachers to use with students in grades 5-8 as they read Surviving the Applewhites, a Newbery Honor Book by Stephanie S. Tolan. Included is a 19 PAGE STUDENT BOOKLET (plus an ANSWER KEY) that divides the text into SIX reading assignments with questions and tasks to go with each one. In addition, there is a BOOKMARK master for helping students keep track of vocabulary words. The booklet is designed for independent work so that students can work on this in class while the teacher is meeting with another group. Created by Jean Martin
The questions and tasks in this booklet cover and reinforce the skills that good readers and writers need. The skills covered include comprehension, vocabulary, summarizing, connecting to the text, point-of-view, visualizing, character evaluation, and determining author's purpose. The packet also gives students practice in writing to explain their thinking and to demonstrate their understanding.

Jake Semple has gotten kicked out of every school he's been to in Rhode Island. Now Traybridge Middle School in North Carolina has just given him the boot and his social worker says that the Creative Academy will be his last chance before juvenile hall. And that is where he meets the Applewhites and where Jake feels he'll be out on his ear in no time. Surprisingly, Jake is in for a real awakening and a re-education.
Appropriate for students in grades 5-8. Reading level is approximately 6th grade.

Very well put together. I haven't used the whole packet yet as we are just starting the novel, but I look forward to using it! Makes my job a lot easier! Thank you for the work you have done! I would have liked to see some prereading activities though.

Thank you for doing all this work for me! I love this book and was looking forward to reading it with my 8th graders, but not looking forward to creating the packet to go with it. I found the vocabulary a little light, so I have supplemented there. I'm glad I did, because after doing a page on context clues from the first four chapters, I found deficits in understanding that I was not expecting. I also found that my students need more comprehension questions for each chapter, so I supplemented with another TpT product. This is the basis, though, and it's creative, clear, and practical. Thank you.

My 20-plus years of teaching included 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades in Colorado, California, New Jersey, and Illinois. I've recently retired and now find myself as busy as ever! While I taught I loved creating meaningful and stimulating worksheets for my students, especially literature packets...but finding the time for it was always a challenge. Now I can spend a significant amount of time creating and publishing to help other teachers who are too busy teaching to have time to create as well!
