Systems of Two Linear Equations Bundle - I thru IV for Busy Teachers
Finding the Number of Solutions for Linear Systems
4 Pages: 2-page Handout (Lesson) / Worksheet / Key
Equation editor software within MS Word is used for a clear, professional look.
Word is needed to print. MathType 4.0 or later is needed to edit equations.
Page 1 is a handout that clearly and concisely articulates the 3 ways that the two lines of a linear system can exist, and the number of solutions that result in each case. This is done two ways--in concise tabular form, and one case at a time using example systems and their graphs.
Page 2 continues the handout by reworking the previous table to illustrate how to figure out how many solutions a system has depending on the slope and y-intercept of each line. Two examples are given and flushed out in great detail.
Page 3 is a 12-question worksheet with room for student work. Each question directs the student to indicate how many solutions each system has. The worksheet begins easily with both equations of each system in slope-intercept form. It progresses gradually to systems in which both equations are in standard form (and therefore need to be rewritten in slope-intercept form by the student to discover the number of solutions for the system).
Page 4 is the KEY for the worksheet (questions with answers).
