I gave this Double-Entry Journal assignment to my advanced 8th graders to complete as we read THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET. It would also be suitable for 7th grade and 9th grade. There are 3 pages included in this download (as shown by the sample images). The directions of the assignment read as follows:
You are to write a response for ten (10) passages. I will pick five (5), and you will pick five (5). Each response is worth 10 points, totaling 100 points for this assignment.
On the left-hand side of each DEJ page, you must write the chapter number, title, and page number
where the passage is. You must then copy the entire passage. When I give you a passage, I
will provide that information for you. On the right-hand side of each page, under the heading
"Response," write your reaction to the passage.
Do NOT summarize the selection or tell me what is happening in that particular passage. You are
to write what you think or how you might feel if you were in the same situation, as well as connect to the world and/or other texts (text-to-self, text-to-world, text-to-text). You must also make some comment on at least one (1) of the literary elements (e.g., setting, mood, tone, figurative language, foreshadowing, theme). THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL. YOU MUST MAKE A TEXT-TOWORLD,OR TEXT-TO-TEXT CONNECTION AS WELL AS ADDRESS AT LEAST ONE LITERARY ELEMENT FOR THE PASSAGE. UNDERLINE your text-to-world or text-to-text connection and HIGHLIGHT your comment(s) on at least one literary element.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I returned to my Junior High School in Glendale, CA, which is now Toll Middle School (instead of "Junior High"), and taught English for three years. I've taught 7th Grade Regular English and ELD 4 and 8th Grade Regular, Advanced English and ELD 1-2, and 3. I went back to substituting after teaching 3 years full-time but have since been pursuing a writing career. Although I am no longer a classroom teacher, I hope the tests, worksheets, reference sheets, and activities that I had created while I was in the classroom make the days go by a little easier for today's and tomorrow's teachers.
