Take a Walk on the Wild Side! is a great way to introduce or practice finding perimeter for young children. This hands-on activity provides opportunities for students to find perimeter of familiar objects in the classroom or at home. The easy-to-follow directions card instructs the children to place 'footprints' (small cards with pictures of sneakers) around the outside edges of objects and count them or add the sides together to find the perimeter. Simply copy the sneakers onto heavy paper, laminate if desired, and cut apart. Reproduce the recording sheet or program the blank one provided with your choice of objects to measure.
This activity, created by Terry Palmieri, BZTeacher, is suitable for independent practice or for use in a math center.
