September 19th, 2012, marks the 10th anniversary of "International Talk like a Pirate Day!" Seriously, it's an actual holiday celebrated all over the world. So let's celebrate!
What better way to commemorate such an important occasion than to spend the day talking like pirates and researching the lives of real pirates like Blackbeard, Francis Drake, and Calico Jack! Shiver me timbers!
If any of ye mangy sea-dogs dares to download this treasure, here's what ye'll get:
* A double-sided "Pirate Lingo" handout packed with fun pirate-y vocabulary suggestions to help kids talk like pirates
* An Activity Overview overhead page with instructions for the research project and a list of some of history's most famous real-life pirates
* A two-page Research Log to help students organize their pirate research
* A two-page Teacher's Guide with lesson instructions and ties to Common-Core Standards
I hope you have a blast with this activity. Remember that it's okay to take a break and let the kids do something fun (especially if you're secretly helping them build important skills in the process.)

That's really weird. I just downloaded it myself and it all looks right. I wonder if there's a compatibility issue with your particular machine. Have you tried viewing it as a Word file? Try installing the included font and viewing it in Word. Sometimes PDFs can do weird things.
If you would email me a screen shot of what it looks like on your computer, I might be able to find a way around the issue you're having. Send it to arikdurfee58@yahoo.com.
In the meantime, I've re-uploaded the file and I think it should solve the problem. I saved it in two different PDF formats. Hopefully one of them works. And if not, as a last resort, I saved each page as a separate image file that will DEFINITELY upload correctly and look right on your screen.

I don't really have a question - just wanted to suggest that you warn about some of sexually inappropriate behaviors of some of the pirates on your Talk Like a Pirate Day lesson. However, it is my fault I didn't research every pirate completely. One of my 5th grade students asked me what a Chinese prostitute was (Cheng I Sao) and I was put in quite a spot. I did tell my students that real pirates were certainly not of the moral type, but I didn't expect that! Thank you for your time in listening to my suggestion.

Hmm. Very good point. I might consider taking her off. However, it's probably tough to find a real pirate who didn't participate in some scandalous behavior. It might be better if I just change the age rating / grade level suggestion on this one. That discussion wouldn't be such a problem in a seventh or eighth grade class, but you're right that it's a bit much for fifth graders to digest.
