A tangram is an ancient Chinese moving piece puzzle which consists of seven pieces called "tans".
Why are tangrams so important?
* Children experiment with geometric concepts.
* Manipulating them stimulates the visual-spatial awareness of the mind.
* Tangrams give learners real experience with the properties of shapes.
* Mathematical concepts are explored through tangrams: Congruency, Symmetry, Area, Perimeter and Geometric shapes.
In this packet, each one of the tangram puzzles has been created by hand so that the tans will fit into them. Several resources supply puzzles for tangrams but do not create them for the tans to actually fit inside of them!
Children are encouraged to create different geometric shapes using their tans given specific instructions. They are also challenged to solve customized tangram puzzles of various objects using all seven of their tans. This task is not as easy as it may seem, but these puzzles are so important in developing strong visual-spatial, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
This tangram activity packet includes the following objects:
* a house
* a lamp
* a sitting man
* a sailboat
* a camel
* a leaping woman
and
* a duck
Although children are concrete learners until around the age of twelve, tangrams are not just for children... Tangrams are for everyone!

Really, really well done. Some of my students are better at it than I am! A quick tip to those who print out multiple copies of tans-- write letters on the back to differentiate which group is which, otherwise you will have hours of reorganizing n your hands (like I did--oops!).

So happy to hear that! They work great for math centers, too! (A good piece of advice is to laminate them so that you can use them each year.) Also, a nice challenge would be to have your students create their own shape/animal/object and pass it along to their peers to solve. (Post them up on the wall to show how creative they are.) Or perhaps you can take one tan at a time and work on fractions with them... The opportunities are endless!

Great product - I made the tangram pieces on cardstock and they lasted a long time. The children couldn't get enough of the fun shape pictures!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Grades Taught:
I have taught Math for 18 years to children and teenagers from Kindergarten through 11th Grades. I am an educational speaker at several conferences, some of which include the MMC and ICTM. I have also initiated a Math Enrichment Club for Grades 1 - 3. Currently, I am teaching high school math. When possible, I assist with math coaching at various schools throughout the Chicago area.
