This 45 page, integrated, metacognative literature study involves a differentiated, multiple abilities approach to teaching both the book Maroo of the Winter Caves as well as the history standards for early man. Maroo is a book about early humans, set at the end of the Ice Age. Some of the key ideas in the understanding of the book are the ways of nomadic life, the impact of climate change and the geographic differences facing people at that time. This unit is about reading strategies, but is made stronger by a thorough look at early man at the end of the Ice Age. The ideas behind the reading strategies come mostly from the following resources: Mosaic of Thought by Susan Zimmermann and Ellin Oliver Keene (1997,) some of the ideas from reciprocal teaching by Palincsar (1986,) and some of the content strategies come from Project GLAD (http://www.projectglad.com/).
