This math and literacy SMART board lesson is great for introducing equations to students as well as for introducing the concept that addition and subtraction are opposite (inverse) operations. This lesson could also be used to teach numbers that are one more and one less.
The SMART board lesson has three slides. The first slide is the title page with glowing fireflies. The next page is an interactive lesson that can be used when reading the story. The fireflies can be moved into or out of the jar. The following slide continues to have interactive fireflies and a jar along with interactive numbers to allow students to build equations to match the fireflies inside or out of the jar.
Ten Flashing Fireflies SMART board lesson has been made to accompany the book Ten Flashing Fireflies by Philemon Sturges. The book Ten Flashing Fireflies has at least two different lessons that go with it by Math Solutions (Math Solutions--founded by Marilyn Burns). One of the lessons can be found in Minilessons for Math Practice Grades K-2
I used the free fonts from http://www.kevinandamanda.com/fonts/ in case you want the font from the title page to appear the same as it does on the title slide. The font is called Baby Boston.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have nine years of experience with this being my tenth. I am now in the fourth year of my position as (K-5) math facilitator. Previous to being a math facilitator, I worked as a third grade teacher for 6 years. Three of my 6 years as a third grade teacher, I departmentalized teaching mainly math, science, and social studies.
