On  September 18, 2013Jessica Clancy (TpT Seller) said:
I am in love with this!! It is so comprehensive, neatly arranged, and easy to follow. I teach below level 7th and 8th grade students and this was the perfect challenge for them. I take 20 minutes to go over and review each day instead of 10 minutes and we do it during small group. I just started using it two weeks ago and I have already seen such a change in my students understanding of writing. Starting the unit with proofreading was very smart and helpful for myself and the students to "speak the same language". I have several ELL students and they use the proofreading marks as a tool to communicate with me when they don't know how to spell or say something grammatically correct. I can't wait to continue using this program.. If you are looking for a grammar unit to align with what you already use in the classroom then this is the product to buy. Everything you need is in one neat package!

This is my go-to grammar in 8th grade. This was money WELL SPENT! I have seen more in-depth understanding and had better class discussions about grammar this semester. The use of contemporary literature is a great injection of fun into our daily grammar, too. I'm actually looking forward to see how this class scores on their standardized tests based on their work with Mr. Durfee's Ten-Minute Grammar.

My students use iPads. I was able to modify the Word document to be uploaded to student iPads. When they walk into class, they take out their iPads and immediately begin their task for the day by annotating in the Adobe app. After our five minutes work time, I call on a student to display their answers using the Apple TV, and we review. Each student is able to make their corrections. They then have it all in one place to study/review for the quiz! They love it, and so do I! Awesome product!!

As a first year teacher I found this to be a great resource! We do not have grammar books for my 8th graders so I use this as bell ringer work everyday. This was honestly the most helpful thing I could have found as a first year teacher! Thank you so much! The only issue I have is some of the sentences were a little questionable but they were not a huge issue.

On  October 20, 2013,  Buyer asked:
Hi
Are these files Adobe pdf or Word? I would need a Word version to alter them to English English (spelling etc). Sorry - hope that makes sense. Thanks, M Bone
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  October 20, 2013Arik Durfee answered:
They come in both Word and PDF files. It also comes with a few font files you would have to install, but then you'll be able to edit them all you want.
On  November 5, 2013Tboston (TpT Seller) asked:
Certainly interested, but I have a few questions. Are there lessons for L8.2a-c ellipsis and dash, L8.3a conditional and subjunctive mood, and L8.5a-c verbal irony, puns, denotations specifically?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  November 5, 2013Arik Durfee answered:
I can't remember if I listed those specific standards. If I did, I probably need to remove them because I don't think those concepts are covered. I think ellipses are covered in the "Using Quotations" unit, but I don't specifically cover the other concepts you listed.

Thanks for the question.
On  September 8, 2013Eileen Snover (TpT Seller) asked:
I would be interested in printing this in landscape with two (slightly reduced) lessons per page. Would this be possible? I want to use less paper, and also have my students paste these lessons and answers directly into their Interactive Notebooks - it becomes a living breathing active learning tool.
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  September 8, 2013Arik Durfee answered:
I'm sure you could take the PDF files and print them two to a page.

I didn't see any preview of the bell-ringers. Can you describe what these look like? Is there enough for the entire school year?

Thanks!

On  September 1, 2013Arik Durfee answered:
To see a preview of the bell-ringers, the best thing to do would be to just download the two Ten-Minute Grammar units that are available for free:
"Proofreading Marks"
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Proofreading-Marks-Ten-Minute-Grammar-Unit-1-148106
"Subjects and Predicates"
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Subjects-and-Predicates-Ten-Minute-Grammar-Unit-10-148088

These units are meant to last one week, maybe a week and a half if the kids need extra practice before the final quiz.

And as for whether there is enough for the school year: YES and more! In fact, because each unit provides extra practice material (including 3 days of extra bell-ringers), it would actually be impossible to do EVERYTHING in this unit in one school year--but it works out because your students most likely won't need the extra practice in ALL of the units. But there is definitely enough material here to keep your kids learning and practicing grammar every single day of the school year.

Thanks for the question!

Hi Arik! I'm interested in purchasing this package. Based on the preview, I assumed I would be getting a PDF version. If I buy it, would you be able to send me a Word version if I provided you with my email?
I'm asking because I teach by semester, not by the year, so I would have to condense some things for the sake of time.

Thanks for any help!

Unfortunately, TpT doesn't give sellers any control over such things. I would be happy to help you out because I know how frustrating that can be. But I can't award refunds or make exchanges in any way. The website just isn't set up like that.

Sorry for the frustration. I hope the unit proves to be worth it anyway--it should save you a ton of time this year.

I tried to see if this question was already asked, but I couldn't find it so sorry if it's a repeat! I teach 6-8th grade ELA. So I have the same students for all three of their middle school years. Do you think there's a good way to divide this up over three years?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  June 29, 2013Arik Durfee answered:
That's a good question. I have found that it's pretty tough to fit all three trimester units into a year, just because things get delayed for various reasons. So it might work to do two the first year, have them review parts they're struggling with during the second year and do the third trimester, then in the third year do more review and practice.

Right now I'm working on a high-school version of this. It might be possible to make it work with kids as young as 8th grade, but I'm not 100% sure as I've only just started writing it.

I'll think more on this and try to get back to you.

On  June 25, 2013Arik Durfee answered:
I'm working on it now because I know I'll need it next year. I didn't use my Ten-Minute Grammar in 9th grade this year because a lot of the students got it with me in 8th grade. So I'm having to develop a new set of units for me to use from now on. I'm going to call it Ten-Minute Revision, and it will focus a lot more on big writing and revising concepts instead of the smaller grammar concepts. Each unit will come with several example essays and will draw examples from them.

I've got the first two-week mini-unit done (which is the hardest part because I'll use that one as a template for all the rest). I plan to finish at least one a week for the rest of the summer. So by the time school starts, I will definitely have the first trimester done, and then I'll finish the other two sets throughout the school year, with the end of each trimester being my deadline.

Thanks so much for the interest. I've got a lot of work ahead of me, but I'm excited to share it with you all when I'm done.

Hello--
I was just wondering if you do anything with sentence diagramming...I love your ten minute grammar, but I'm wondering if pairing it with sentence diagramming would help grammar click with more students. Or, for the few students who still struggle with grammar, what techniques do you use? Right now, I try to squeeze in as much 1-on-1 time, but that's difficult!

On  February 19, 2013Arik Durfee answered:
Thanks for the question! I love sentence diagramming, but I don't teach it a lot. In my first year as a 7th grade teacher, I taught sentence diagramming. The problem I found was that I was spending more time teaching the rules of diagramming than I was teaching the rules of language and grammar (what kind of line to make for a gerund phrase vs. a prepositional phrase, etc.) But I think a simplified version of diagramming (maybe that focuses on subjects and predicates) could be a great match with Ten-Minute Grammar.

Thanks for the question!

The folder you downloaded included three font files. In order to get the Word versions to look right, you have to install those three fonts. Depending on your school computer's administrative settings, you may need to have your school tech aide install them for you. But it only takes a few seconds, and then everything should look right.

If that still doesn't work, send me a message at arikdurfee58@yahoo.com and I'll see if there's anything else I can do.

I have a few things for you if you can help me with a page! I found some errors which you asked us to report if we noticed. In Homophones, on the Extra Practice page, in the 3rd paragraph the choices need to be edited. There are two "too" options. Also, on the same page the "so" choice should have a "/" instead of a period to separate them. Then lastly, in the last paragraph, the "a" before the choices in the first sentence can come out. If you could help me by posting the answers to 2nd pg of Verbs Extra Practice in Nouns & Verbs, I would be very grateful. All the answers come up as "asks." Thank you, my students are doing very well with this product!

Hi Arik, love your TMG !! I am using it with 8th graders. Do you have anything on verb moods (indicative, imperative, subjunctive etc.)? Thanks, Amy S

On  October 21, 2012Arik Durfee answered:
Unfortunately, no. Verb moods came up in my original brainstorming, but it ended up not fitting in anywhere in my current progression.

I am thinking about a new series, geared more for high-schoolers, and I think verb moods might end up fitting in with that. Unfortunately, though, I can't see getting those started until much later on this school year.

Sorry to disappoint,

Some of the individual units might be a bit advanced, but a lot of the units are intended as review for 8th graders (things they should have learned in 5th through 7th grade). I have had several reviewers comment that they've tried it with 6th graders and they had a good experience.

Hopefully that helps. Thanks for the question,

Ciao Arik,

I am happily using your complete (TMG) grammar program. Love it. One question: Is there a really easy way to upload individual pages to my website for students who were absent? I think I tried copying and pasting a page at a time, but that would be a pain. I don't want to post the whole section since it has the quiz. Any ideas? What do you do for absentees?

Also, in the school I work in at Aviano AFB, we have a block schedule. I usually only see the students 3X per week. I should be able to figure out a work-around to fit this all in, but so far my brain is on overload from the beginning of the school year. Are you aware of anyone else who figured out a way to utilize the complete program on a block schedule?

Since these are not your problems, I'd be fine with a "sorry...no clue" response. I thought it couldn't hurt to ask since you seem like such a bright guy!

Grazie!

On  September 16, 2012Arik Durfee answered:
As far as posting things for absent students, I think I would do it like this:

Save a copy of the entire unit in Word (and make sure you have the font installed). Then delete the quiz pages and the two page that have quarter sheets. Then save that as a PDF and put it on your site. That way they would have access to all the bell ringers and even the worksheets and you would just have to tell them which pages they missed.

As for the block schedule, hat's a tough one. One possible idea would be to bookend each class with grammar. You could do one bell ringer during the first ten minutes. Then you could do another during the last ten minutes as sort of an exit quiz. That might give students incentive to focus and work quickly as thy would need to finish before they could leave. I had a blok schedule at my first school a few years ago, and i found that with such a long class it worked better if I planned in a lot of transitions from one type of activity to another. So I think the bookend thing might be better than trying to do two or three of the bell work assignments at the same time. I don't know if that's ideal, but it's one way to do it.

Thanks for the questions!

This isn't really a question - more an FYI and you may have already dealt with it. In Proofreading Marks, Day Two, there is an extra error - a run on sentence that needs punctuation. I think it's the third line of the passage. But I may have an older version that has been fixed. -Birgitta

Thank you so much for noticing that. I'll get it fixed and get the unit reposed for everyone. I did a lot of proofreading and typo/error correcting when I went through the units with my classes last year, but I'm afraid a few have probably slipped past me. That's the trouble you have when you try to make something this massive. So I really appreciate you pointing mistakes like this out--and a note to any other TMG users, please do the same! I always like being able to improve the units.

On the page for the FULL YEAR product, there are links to all the smaller units. If you just look for "Trimester Three" underlined, click on that and it will take you there. The links used to show up in red before TpT did their recent update, so hopefully that is fixed soon so the links are easier to see.

Another way to find it would be to just go to my main seller page. You should see a big banner that says "Trimester Three Now Available." Clicking on that will also take ou where you won't to go.

Teachers Pay Teachers
On  July 17, 2012Arik Durfee answered:
Actually, that's not a stupid question at all. TpT has a nice feature that lets you download a purchase as many times as you need to. If you log in to your TpT account and click on the "My Purchases" tab (right next to the "My Sales" tab), you'll see a list of everything you've ever purchased with your account. That's where you can write reviews of products, and that's also where you'll find a button that says "DOWNLOAD NOW." So even if you purchase something at home over the summer, you can always download it again when you go back to school.

That's great that you asked that because I wonder if others out there are hesitant to buy something over the summer because they don't want to have to deal with transferring files from their home computer to their school computer. But this feature should make it pretty stress free.

Thanks for bringing that up,
Arik
