A MASSIVE three-month unit covering a wide range of grammar concepts complete with daily bell ringers, worksheets, quizzes, a final exam, a teacher's guide, and more!

Ten-Minute Grammar is a comprehensive grammar curriculum based on the Common Core Standards for seventh-grade, eighth-grade, or ninth-grade students. Using only the first ten minutes of each day, a series of nine individual units will help students learn a range of grammar skills that build on one another. Concepts students will focus on include:
* Using standard proofreading marks
* Spelling and correcting errors with common homophones
* Identifying hard-to-recognize nouns and verbs, including verb phrases
* Correcting errors with capitalization
* Avoiding common pronoun problems, including pronoun-antecedent agreement and choosing between subject pronouns and object pronouns
* Distinguishing between action verbs, linking verbs, helping verbs, and verb phrases
* Identifying gerunds and infinitives and using them correctly in sentences
* Identifying perfect and progressive verb phrases and choosing the most effective verb phrase for a given sentence

To give the students exposure to quality published writing, some of the practice example sentences from each unit are drawn from novels from a variety of genres:
* Sunrise over Fallujah and Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Meyers
* Stargirl by Walter Jerry Spinelli
* White Fang by Jack London
* The Hunger Games by Jack Suzanne Collins
* I Am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President by Josh Lieb
* Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
* Drums, Girls, & Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick
* Incarceron by Catherine Fisher

This MASSIVE 182-page unit includes everything you'll need for an entire trimester of grammar instruction:

Nine individual units, each including...
* Seven to nine days of bell-ringer activities
* Daily wordplay activities
* Two or three double-sided worksheets
* One unit quiz
* Plus a full 159-page teacher's guide with answer keys and extra lesson plan instructions

A full trimester review unit, including...
* Nine days of bell-ringer activities
* More wordplay activities
* A comprehensive, 100-question final exam
* Two optional answer sheets, including one that could be used along with a bubble answer sheet for fast grading
* A teacher's guide with answer keys and tips for reviewing material with students

Literally hundreds of hours have gone into creating the materials included here. How much of your prep time do you spend searching for worksheets or quizzes or, even worse, creating them from scratch? The Ten-Minute Grammar program will save you a huge amount of time!

The daily bellwork or bell ringers can be copied onto transparencies for an overhead projector or projected digitally onto a white board or a SmartBoard.

Unit files will come as a PDF file, but the folder also includes the original Word files in case you want to make small tweaks to a page or two (which I often like to do when I purchase lesson materials from someone else.) Download the FREE preview in PDF format for a sample of what you'll get in the unit.

This master unit represents one-third of a full-year grammar program. Be sure to check out Trimester Two and Trimester Three. Or download them all together in one big, money-saving bundle: TMG: FULL YEAR!

Will there be a high school version of ten minute grammar?

That's my plan. I'm hoping to have the first few mini-units out during this school year and then finish the whole program over the summer. Unfortunately, I'm so busy with a new school, grade, and curriculum this year to do anything that extensive while school is in session, so it will have to wait just a bit.

I'll keep followers updated, and hopefully I'll have some news on that front soon.

Thanks for your interest!

Yes for both. Each unit has a full teacher's guide and answer key, and the files come as both PDF files and Microsoft Word files for easy editing.

I'm sorry you feel that way. In my defense, the books I chose as examples are almost all from Newbery-winning novels or authors, and I think they are all valuable and worthy examples of young-adult literature. Also in my defense, the literature used in these units is clearly listed in the product description (I put it there very purposely because most buyers have commented that the great young-adult lit is one of their favorite parts of the unit).

I would be more than happy to give you a refund, but unfortunately Teachers Pay Teachers isn't set up to do refunds in that way. I would also be happy to replace this with one of my other products for free, but I'm afraid you might find all of my materials similarly offensive.

Again, I'm really sorry that you were disappointed,
Arik

I purchased the Ten Minute Grammar lessons but was unable to download it because I was told the materail was too much. How do I secure this booklet? Can you send it as an attachment to me. I tried to download it digitally but said I needed to contact the seller? Is that accurate? Please inform me what I need to do in order to get this lesson into my hands.
Thanks

Hey Arik! I was wondering about the teacher's guide for Nouns and Verbs, page 16. You have the blanks as 'ask' in my version; I'm confused as to why. I'm assuming that the students are supposed to fill that blank in with a single verb. For example:

She thought the old man was making it up.

You have the 'was making' highlighted; students should replace it with 'made'. Now the sentence should read as: She thought the old man made it up.

Is this correct? I'm assuming this based on the directions above.

Hi Arik, this program looks great. My question is a tech one. When purchasing, the info states to make sure you have ability to open zip compressed files. I have a Mac with office on it. Will I be okay to open this?

Thanks,

Carri

You should be okay on any computer. Zip lies are very standard, so Mac vs. PC shouldn't make a difference.

Thanks for the question!

I bought Trimester 1, will I also need to buy Trimester 2 and 3 to make a full year? (silly question)
Are the lessons in Trimester 2 freestanding, or do they depend on the completion of Trimester 1?

Hey, great question.

The units in T2 and T3 can be used on their own or in succession. Throughout the weekly mini units there is built-in review that goes over concepts from past units, but they don't DEPEND on past units. So you could actually just spend all year on Trimester Two (without doing T1) if you didn't want to do it every day, and the units would work just fine like that. It's really up to you.

Hope that helped,
Arik

Hello- crazy question----I purchased your ten minute grammar trimester one and want to use it as a bell ringer. Grammar 1 is proof reading and when I open the file I have 2 word documents and 2adobe documents-do you have a version that can be shown to students without the answers?
July 17, 2012 Report inappropriate comment

Arik Durfee  (TpT Seller)
The Adobe PDFs are the ones you want to focus on. Each mini-unit will have two PDFs - the student file and the one labelled "Teacher's Guide." The Teacher's guide has answers marked, and the other one doesn't.

With the first unit, it can be a bit confusing because the student PDF has red proofreading marks indicating many of the mistakes. But those aren't actually answers, they're part of the question. In this first unit, the students are just learning what the proofreading marks MEAN, not necessarily trying to identify the errors themselves. So if you open up the main file and the Teacher's Guide side by side, you'll see the difference right away. With the rest of the units, that usually won't be an issue.

Hopefully that helps. Thanks for the question,
Arik

How do you go about using this for 7th AND 8th grade classes. I am a first year teacher, so this looks very appealing to me, but I have two sections of 8th and one of 7th, so I worry that if I do it in both, they 7th graders would see it again next year. Any suggestions?

Arik Durfee  (TpT Seller)
Yeah, that's a tough one. It's always frustrating for me when I have a year with mostly 8th grade classes and one 7th grade class or one 9th grade class because it's tough to come up with two totally different ways to teach the same thing so that students who have you again don't get repeats. When I started these grammar units, I originally planned to make a series for 7th grade, one for 8th, and another for 9th that build on one another. It just turned out to be too time consuming. It took me all year to finish the first series. Maybe someday I'll find time to make it a three-year series, but probably not this year.

I had your exact situation two years ago. To be honest (and I know this isn't the best advice ever) there were several times where the 7th and 8th standards matched up exactly, so I just did the same thing with my 7th grade class. The next year, I had about half of those students again as 8th graders (the other half had the other 8th grade teacher). When we went through something that those students had seen before, they just got it again. Not the most effective way of doing it, but I wasn't sure what to do differently. So one way to use the Ten-Minute Grammar lessons would be to just go ahead and do the same thing with your 7th graders. If you have them again as 8th graders, you could designate those students as peer tutors during bell-ringer time. That could help your other students, and the kids you had as 7th graders who didn't fully get it the first time would get a helpful review.

I'm not sure if that's the best plan, but that's probably what I would do in your situation. It's just so hard to come up with two different ways to teach the same state standard. Grammar is especially tough because the standards don't change much from year to year--they're just expected to build on one another. You could always try something different with the 7th graders--I always ended up feeling like, "This is working great with my 8th graders, so why would I change it up for one class?"

Anyway, that's my best advice for such an imperfect situation.

In the main file folder, there should be a Word file that has the entire unit in one document. Let me know if it's not thwere and I'll find a way to get it to you.

Arik,
I teach sixth grade and according to the common cores the part of speech that I have to concentrate is PRONOUNS.. I know that it is stated that this product is for grades 7-9, but what do you think for sixth graders?

Some of the individual units in the Ten-Minute Grammar curriculum would be great for younger grades as they are inteded as review for my 8th graders. So while I might not suggest, say, gerunds and infinitives for a younger grade, the units on pronouns, adjectives and adverbs, capitalization, and others would be very well-suited for sixth graders.

Thanks for the question!

Hi, Arik! I just purchased this product and I have what I hope is a pretty basic problem with a simple answer. :) When I open up the document (I opened the Teacher's Guide in Word first), it looks like a mess of characters. This is not new to me - it has happened several times before - and I assume it is because I don't have all the latest, coolest fonts on my computer. So, what I usually do it hit Control A to select all the text, and then I pick something generic like Times New Roman or Arial. This usually solves any issues. However, I noticed that on the pages where you have the red correction marks, some of them are "off" b/c of the different font. I was wondering if you have a suggestion for which font I should chose, or if there is another way to fix this that I don't know about... Thanks so much for your help. Sincerely, Andie Mitchell

The easiest answer is that I've included a PDF file in the download along with the Word files. The PDF file will show up and look correct no matter what fonts you have installed.

If you want to use the Word version, there are three fonts you need to install:

Maiandra GD
http://fontzone.net/font-details/Maiandra+GD/

Classroom Boredom
http://www.dafont.com/search.php?psize=m&q=classroom

and

Blockography
http://www.dafont.com/search.php?psize=m&q=blockography

Just go to those web links and install the font and everything should look the way it's supposed to.

Let me know if that works, and thanks for the question.

I just found the progression. Thanks!! By any chance, will hyphens and dashes be added into any of these units? :-)

That's a great idea. I've actually been reconsidering a couple of the units about prefixes and roots, just because I'm finding they don't lend themselves to the format quite as well as other grammar concepts. Hyphens and dashes would be a great addition! I'll seriously consider making that change.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Hey, thanks for asking! Yes, there is a list of other skills. With your download, you should have received a PDF file called "Ten-Minute Grammar Unit Progression." I'm in the process of creating the new units now. The progression listed in the file might change a bit, but it should be pretty close.

Thanks!

First of all, thanks for the feedback! I'm glad it's working well for you.

I am using it with my students as we speak, and I'm making minor tweaks as I go so I can constantly improve it. First trimester in my district ends with Thanksgiving break, which means I'll need the new units for my own classroom during the first week of December. That gives me a pretty firm deadline for getting it finished. That said, I don't anticipate having the full Second Trimester unit finished, polished, and posted until right after Christmas break. The first half of the individual units will be up by the beginning of December, but unfortunately you'll have to wait until the beginning of January to purchase the full unit. I wish I could kick it out faster than that, but you'd be amazed at how mind-blowingly time-consuming it is to write these things.

To help out anyone who is planning on buying the Trimester Two unit, for the month of December I'll make the first three individual units of Trimester Two available for FREE. That way you can get rolling on the next trimester without having to purchase some of the units twice.

Trimester One is my highest selling product right now, so I know there are a lot of you out there waiting on Trimester Two. That's good motivation for me! So I PROMISE that I'll have it up and ready to download by January 1st or earlier.

Thank you for asking that question so I can get that info out to anyone else who is wondering the same thing.

I stumbled upon your 10 min. Grammar Item after checking out your POE lesson!

Do you simply spend 10 min a day on each grammar topic in this unit, or do you spend 1o min on the bell ringer and then expand on each topic with the entire class period? I may be interested. Your work looks great!

I actually just spend ten minutes every day on the bell ringer and then we move on to a different assignment (writing or reading). So we do ten minutes of grammar and then move on. I like this because if I try to spend a whole class period on grammar, the students get bored and SO DO I. And it's always a bad sign if the teacher is bored with his or her own lesson.

Thanks for the question and the feedback. I hope this helps!
