If you believe that variety is the spice of writing, then you'll want to purchase this 5 page unique writing lesson. Students will have a ball writing and decoding rebus stories about Thanksgiving. First, there is a rebus for them to decipher. Then there are directions on how to write their own. Next there are 2 pages for writing. The lines are an extra wide distance apart to allow for pictures. Last there is a word bank of Thanksgiving-related words as well as an answer key for the rebus which I created. Of course, the pictures can be drawn by students or done in the technology lab or on classroom computers using computer-generated pictures. They could also create them at home on their own computers. A really fun follow-up might be to have students exchange each other's papers. They would also look nice as a bulletin board or hallway display. If displayed in the hallway, other classes can also get in on the fun!!
P.S. These can be written at any time of the year for any holiday or occasion.

I have taught for 36 years at the 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade levels. Fifth grade is my first love. I teach all major subject areas. In addition to my regular classroom duties, I have taught in a Basic Skills summer school program for many years as well as taught workshops to co-workers in whole language and technology. My other duties at school include being "Teacher in Charge" and Student Council advisor.
