This complete unit is designed to teach students with autism, and other social communication deficits, strategies for showing interest in others. These students often fail to express interest in others, not because they aren't interested in forming social relationships with them, but more often because they simply don't understand how to do so. Explicit instruction is given in strategies, such as asking questions and commenting, that students can implement to demonstrate that they are showing interest in others people. Lesson plans are provided for delivering direct instruction in these strategies. Picture prompts are included in all lessons to encourage students to practice the skill of reading social cues. Multiple worksheets are provided for review and independent practice. Written at approximately a 5th grade level, the materials in this unit can be easily adapted for use with a wide range of students.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I began teaching more than twenty years ago and have taught special and general education classes, at the elementary and secondary levels. Currently I serve as a special education program specialist in a public school district, providing consultation support to both special and general education teachers of students with special needs. As a consultant I spend much of my time assisting our teachers to implement positive behavior supports within their classrooms in order to meet the needs of all of their students, but particularly those who demonstrate significant social, emotional and behavioral challenges.
