The 95 Theses of Martin Luther triggered the Reformation and brought an era of great change to Europe. It was the culmination of centuries of questioning of church practices and demonstrates the passion that underlie Christianity in late Medieval Europe. Martin Luther was passionately defending Christianity even as he was vehemently attacking the actions of the Roman Catholic Church. It is an aspect of the era of "Questioning Received Knowledge" and followed the Renaissance. Through observation and experimentation scientists questioned the science they received from the Classics to bring to fruition the Scientific Revolution. The Age of Exploration challenged previous geographic knowledge by pushing the bounds of Europe's known world. The Reformation turned to the Bible as the ultimate evidence to challenge centuries of church practice, and opened the door to the myriad of Protestant sects that exist today. It is essential that students examine the 95 These of Martin Luther as an example of the passion of late Medieval Christianity and the beginning of the modern world.
