This is a handout I use when introducing the novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. This allows students to prepare themselves for the themes in the novel as well as connect the themes to their own personal beliefs and understanding. You could have the groups discuss all of the themes and then come back together as a class in the end to discuss, or you could have each group responsible for a given theme and be an expert on it. You have a lot of flexibility with this.

Before becoming a teacher, I was a substitute teacher as I attended my undergraduate studies at the State University of New York at Geneseo. I have been a high school English teacher in New York State for 10 years. My undergraduate work consisted of Secondary Education with Concentration in English and History from SUNY Geneseo. My master's degree concentrated on integrating technology into the curriculum from the University of Phoenix Online. Many of my lessons integrate the use of technology in some way. I have been a teacher author for Teachers Pay Teachers since March of 2007.
