I created this chart last summer and used it for the first time this past year and what an amazing effect it had on my students! I enlarged to postersize at Staples, then colored it in for whole group activities. The chant was adapted from another one I have seen: at first we just point and say the ABCs, then we point and say each letter and "read" the picture(ex. A a apple) then we move onto say the letter, its sound, and "read" the picture (ex. B /b/ ball). Next, I make a special copy for individuals to color and make their own and I laminate it for all year use for group activities and for writing time. (Of course, I keep many extra black and white copies). This becomes the anchor for letter identification and sound correlation in my classroom because our large ABC chart looks exactly the same as theirs! The bonus is that the word AND shows up several times in the chant, so they will learn that, too!

Excellent resource. I teach a kindergarten special population focusing on communication skills. All my students recall the lyrics and are aided in recognizing the letters of the alphabet.
I would suggest a companion recording as well as the words to to song, as I have parents practice it with them as well.

I purchased the abc chart but can't figure out how to "chant" it? Any suggestions?

A a apple, B b Ball, C c Cat, and D d doll. E e egg, F f fan G g Goat and H h hand. You have to say each letter 2x OR the letter and its sound OR the sound 2X (depending on what your objective is). That is the key! We always do movements with it, too, to get the kinesthetics (sp) into it as well, whether it is the sign language or something that starts with the sound (bouncing a ball for b!). Does that help?? Hope so, I love it, the kids love it and it really helps them learn the letters and sounds FAST!

Hello. My name is Kathy Smith and I have taught Kindergarten for 36 years. I love it! I am so excited about TPT and I love your creations. You really know kindergarten children. I have an ABC song that we singevery day (using a purchased chart) that has a Cha Cha Cha beat to it. I made it up to get away from the "lmnop" run together in the ABC Song. I saw your chart you made and downloaded it. I could not figure out the tune that you use for this chart. It has the word "and" in it several times and I just can't figure it out. Could you please let me know the tune? I think it would be great to put in our daily notebooks for the children to sing and practice with at home. I can't wait for your reply. As a K teacher, I am already focused on planning for the fall while trying to get through the spring. Hope things are going well for you and keep up the good developmental kindergarten creations. Thanks for sharing.

it goes like this, "a a apple, b b ball, c c cat and d d doll...etc..." as the children begin to know most of the letters by name, i change it to saying the sound /a/ /a/ apple...etc..there is no tune, but it is rhythmic because it rhymes...try it, you'lkl see what i mean. enjoy!

no, it is just a chant. if you do it, you'll notice that it rhymes, so it flows well for the children. i also add movements to represent each letter sound and the kids learn the letters/sounds FAST!
