This literature unit is designed to introduce vocabulary, generate predictions, and enhance comprehension as the student reads The Canada Geese Quilt by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock. The first worksheet asks students to read the back cover synopsis of the story and look at pictures to predict what might happen. Each chapter is introduced with a vocabulary worksheet that increases the reader’s familiarity with words they’ll need to know and asks them to use these words to predict that chapter’s main events. Following each chapter is a set of comprehension questions which require students to recall details, draw conclusions, and project their own feelings into the story. When students finish the story, they are asked to fill in a flow chart that requires them to synthesize the nine most important events and craft them into a short retelling of the story. Finally, students are asked to draw their version of the quilt described in the story. Either or both of these last two worksheets can be used as a final assessment of their comprehension. This unit is designed for confident readers in the second through seventh grades. A complete answer key is included in the download.
