Adaptability, compassion, contemplation and perseverance are character traits found in this original story by Pat Kienzle. Discussion questions follow the story, as well as suggestions for activities. Although this story could be used at the beginning of the school year to promote good character or creativty, it is especially good after Christmas when you can buy candycanes on sale. Use this story as a starting point for creative writing. Pick an object other than a candycane and have students write about other uses for it.
