This assignment is called a Jigsaw Essay because it's done in pieces. It was designed with 2 goals in mind:
1) to help students write stronger essays.
2) to help English teachers cut down on their paper load.
While this assignment takes several class periods, it is time well spent in that it forces students to look at their writing with a more critical eye. Students learn that good writing entails multiple drafts and revision. What's more, they learn to "cut to the chase" by focusing only on the essentials, and they learn to cite from their primary sources. Lastly, teachers have the pleasure of reading 7 well thought out and executed essays rather than 28 potentially mediocre essays (which sadly, many students dash off in the 11th hour). It's a win-win for all!
