Are you tired of answering the question, "What do we do when we're done?" The Early Finishers Board will provide your students with fun and engaging tasks to complete when they finish their work. The board is divided into seven sections: Read It, Write It, Solve It, Draw It, Do It, Make It and Journal It. Students will choose a task from any section and complete it in their Early Finishers Notebook.

Every two weeks, the teacher will switch the tasks in each section so that there are a new set of tasks to complete.

I posted this question yesterday but don't see it today. I do look forward to using your Early Finisher Board. However, I was wondering what do you do to make the students accountable for their work? I have some that will put down anything if they think I'm not going to grade it. I was wondering do you use it as extra credit or what? Thanks

Hi Lisa! Depending on your classroom, there are many different options. Personally I don't recommend marking every single early finisher activity. This would take way too much of your own time. Additionally, the Early Finisher Board is simply meant to be extra, fun activities. So my personal belief is that if everything is being graded, it now turns into "work" and is less fun :) A few suggestions for making students accountable include:

- try meeting with groups of students once a week, or bi-weekly to see what they have completed. They can also look at what each other is working on. Discuss what their favorite activity has been, what was challenging, etc.
- keep a checklist of what students have completed. Although you are not "marking," if the students know that you are keeping some sort of record they will hopefully be more inclined to do their best work.
- try having a whole-class discussion when you have 5 or 10 minutes left in class (as a time-filler) where you have students show one of their favorite early finisher activities. Seeing other students work will be a motivator for many!

I'm a big fan of intrinsic motivation, rather than extrinsic, so I tend to try to motivate through directed praise, and methods like the suggestions above. I'm a big believer that not everything should be marked, as kids need lots and lots of engaging practice!

I hope this helps a bit! Basically, you need to try a few different things and see what works for your students.

Feel free to ask if you have any other questions. Have a great week!

Hi there! Yes, the majority of my resources are suitable for grades 2-4 students. If you are speaking specifically about the Early Finisher Board, you can see more details here:

As you will see when you visit the link above, depending on the ability levels of your students, you may opt for the Early Finisher Combo Pack. If you have any other questions, please let me know!

Thanks for your inquiry,

Hi there.
Can you tell me if the tasks would work in overseas classrooms or is the language US specific? By that I mean if there are things like measurement tasks using miles, or gallons etc.
Thanks

Hi Shelley,

Just wondering if the resources are to be laminated or if they are consumables?

Also, do students need a workbook for the activities? Or could they be stored in a document wallet etc? What have you used to store/complete the activities in?

Thanks
January 3, 2013 Report inappropriate comment

Shelley Gray  (TpT Seller)
Hi there. I do recommend laminating some of the instruction sheets, just so that they can be re-used from year to year. Some are also consumables. It really just depends on the activity. There are also some activities that are simply completed in the student's notebook.

Students require a lined notebook for the board. They will paste notebook strips into the book and then paste activity sheets and/or complete activities directly into the notebook below the strip.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Thanks so much for your interest,

Shelley

Hi there. Yes, some of the activities will be a bit difficult, however many are very open to differentiation so that they are suitable to a wide variety of levels. As well, I have included a supplementary package that includes 10 easier and 10 more difficult activities. You can use the activities in the supplementary package to swap for activities that are too hard. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi!
My Early Finisher Board (40 Weeks) does not come with a Getting Started Folder. I do not know how to get the program started. This is my second email. You replied, "Just open the folder and there it is." I have already done that several times to make sure I did not miss anything.
These were the folders listed:
1. Weeks 1-8
2. Weeks 9-16
3. Weeks 17-24
4. Weeks 25-32
5. Weeks 33-40
6. Supplemental Activities
Am I missing something? Or is it in one of these folders?
I am excited to start and appreciate your help! It looks like a great program!

So, if you double-click on the "Weeks 1-8" folder, you will find 5 files. They will be called "Weeks 1-2," "Weeks 3-4," "Weeks 5-6," "Weeks 7-8" and "Getting Started Guide." Just double-click on those folders to open them up and see the contents. If you continue to have trouble, please feel free to email me at shelley_gray_@hotmail.com.

Hello, this looks like a very complete package! I teach a split 3/4. I would just like to know if most activities can be done in a notebook? Do I need to make multiple photocopies of worksheets? We have a limit on photocopying in my school and it is very strict. I also don't like to waste paper. Would I need to provide a lot of other materials (i.e. art supplies, special paper)? Just want to know how much and what kind of space to prepare. Thank you so much.
August 25, 2012 Report inappropriate comment

Shelley Gray  (TpT Seller)
Hi there! Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, the Early Finisher activities are intended to be done inside a notebook. There is, however, some photocopying that needs to be done. For each set of activities, there are some that will be done directly in the notebook, and some that will need photocopied and pasted in the notebook once completed by the student. There are also notebook strips with a summary of the activity intended for students to paste into their notebook. I have seen one person set up her board differently though, where the notebook strips are laminated and re-used, rather than being pasted into the notebook. So I think that there are some modifications that could be made to lessen the copying; however you are still going to need to do some. As far as other materials, not much else is needed. In some activities you will need to provide old newspaper or magazine articles, or some poster paper, but not much else is needed. To prepare a space, you can either set up the board on a tri-fold board as I have done, or on an existing bulletin board in your room so that no extra space is taken up.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Have a great weekend,

Shelley

Hello, I am a fourth grade teacher and in need of something like this product. Just by viewing all the comments and seeing examples, I believe without a doubt this is worth the money. I am just concerned that this isn't the right level for my students. I have several high level students this year who already gets finished with everything. Do you think this product is going to be what I need or do I need to get the other one you are working on. I don't want it to be too hard for them but not too easy either. Thanks so much.

Hi there! It was my intention to create something that all students can do without teacher assistance, so that you are free to work with other students while the early finishers are busy doing other activities. I have also tried to create the activities with differentiation in mind, so that many different levels of learners will be appropriately challenged. That being said, there have been several people who feel that it is not challenging enough, but many have said that it will work perfect :) With the 1-4 set, I have included a supplementary package that includes 10 more challenging activities. These are activities that you can swap for ones that you feel may be too easy.

I think that if I were you, I would purchase the 1-4 set. I am still confident that this will work well with your students. However, if you feel differently after purchasing, I will certainly refund your money or make sure that you get the other one instead.

I am still working out the details in my mind, but I think that once the 5-6 version is complete, I will offer it at an extreme discount to those who have already purchased the 1-4 version if they would like to own both sets.

I hope this answers your question! Don't be worried about spending money and not being happy with your purchase. I will work with you to ensure that you are 100% completely satisfied :)

Have a great day,

Shelley

Hi! I am new to TPT and just saw instructions to redownload the early finishers file. A question: Is there a way to know what has changed/been updated aside from looking through the entire file. Hi there! If you downloaded it after July 15, you should have received the updated file. The only part that I added was a completely separate file called "Supplementary Activities." These are other activities that you can use if one of the originals is too hard or too easy for your students. If you purchased it before July 15, just re-download it under "My Purchases" and you should see the Supplementary Activities file. Nothing else in the original files has been changed. Let me know if you have any trouble.

Hi Donna! Indeed, you may find that some of the activities in the package are a bit easy for 4th grade. If you buy the entire collection, I have also added a supplementary package that includes easier and more difficult activities that you can swap for ones that are not suitable for your students. I have also tried to make all activities very open to differentiation so that all students have the potential to work at different levels. It is also important to remember that you want students to be able to do these activities without asking for help from you. If you do purchase this item, and find that you are not completely happy with it, please contact me and I will arrange for a refund :)

When will the 5-6 version be ready. I teach 4th grade, and many of the tasks on this set may be too easy for some of my students. When the 5-6 version is released will it have the same categories so that I could pull some of the tasks from each set to use on one board? Also, will there be some sort of 'deal' available if one wishes to purchase both sets? I am very interested in purchasing, but I am afraid my students would be able to finish the tasks so quickly they would just be running back and forth to the board to get another task. Thank you!!!

Hi Mary! First of all, did you receive the supplementary package for the Early Finisher Board? It contains 10 easier activities and 10 more challenging activities that you can use to swap for ones that don't suit your class as well. I added it to the Early Finisher file about 2 weeks ago. If you bought after that time, it should be in there. If you bought before that, you can go back in to "My Purchases" and re-download.

The Grade 5-6 complete set will be ready by the beginning of September. I will definitely be offering some sort of deal for people who want to purchase both sets...I just have to think a bit more about how I will do it :)

I don't think you can reply to this again, so feel free to email me at shelley_gray_@hotmail.com for any further communication :)

Hi Rachel! Thank you so much for your question. I am currently working on a 5-6 version of the Early Finisher Board, and I had a feeling I might be asked about a K version :) I don't have it on my to-do list right now, however that doesn't mean that it won't happen. I have no experience teaching K - that is the main reason that I am leery to create one; however I could easily do some research and try some things out with my own 4-year-old. If I do make one, it would likely not be until 2013. So, sorry that I'm not really giving you an answer. I guess I would just have to really look into it before committing :) As long as you are following me on TpT or FB, you would be notified if I ever do create one.

Thanks again for the kind words, and for putting an idea into my head :) lol

I teach fourth grade. Are your early finisher boards grade level? I noticed you had 1-4 and 5-6. I would need mine to target fourth grade curriculum. Thank you and what a great idea. One more thing... do you grade them or give extra credit for work completed?
July 22, 2012 Report inappropriate comment

Shelley Gray  (TpT Seller)
Hi Stephanie! If I were you I would get the one that is labeled for
Grades 1-4. In that package, I have included a supplementary file with activities that are more challenging if you want to replace some of the easier ones in the package. The important thing to remember is that you want your students to be able to do the activities independently, without pre-teaching or assistance from you. So although some activities may not be directly related to grade 4 curriculum, they are tasks that can be completed independently and that will reinforce concepts that have been learned. If you purchase it and find that it is not what you were looking for, I will be more than happy to refund you :)

As far as assessment goes, that is completely up to you. Because it is for early finishers, not all students will be completing all tasks. My personal philosophy of assessment is that not all work should be graded, but depending on your students you may have a different opinion! I think that you need to decide what will work best in your unique situation and go from there. I would begin the year without the extrinsic motivation, and see if they are already intrinsically motivated to complete the tasks. If they are, then that is fantastic and no further credit should be needed :)

If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

Have a great evening,

Shelley

With the Early Finisher board, do you recommend any kind of reward for completing a certain number of tasks? I am hoping students are motivated to complete tasks without the need for a reward, but not sure. I was considering having them place a sticker by their name for each completed task, then when they get 10 they receive an extra classroom ticket. But then, will they just hurry through tasks?

Hi there! Thank you for your question. I really think that this is totally up to you as the teacher. Personally, I don't think I would offer a reward, for the exact reasons that you state. However, depending on your students, they may need some form of extrinsic motivation. Perhaps you could begin the year without the stickers, and see how it goes. Then, if you feel that students are simply not motivated, you could add a sticker component or some other type of reward. I think that I will start a conversation about this and some other Early Finisher Board ideas on my Facebook page in the next week or so. I would love to hear what other teachers are planning on doing. Also, I will probably be asking for ideas on my FB page, so please feel free to follow me there and contribute your ideas :) http://www.facebook.com/teachingresourcesbyshelleygray

Thanks again! Have a great day,

Shelley

Hi there!

I absolutely love your early finisher board. I have a few questions though. I know your board is listed under 1st grade materials. I actually teach kindergarten at a private school and the curriculum is very advanced. The students complete seat work on their own while I am doing reading circles. Compared to public schools, my kindergarten curriculum is at a 1st grade level. Do you think your early finisher board will be too difficult for my students?

Thanks in advanced!

Courtney

Hi Courtney! Sorry that it took me so long to get back to you! My computer was in getting fixed and for some reason I couldn't reply to you with my phone :(

Anyways, to answer your question, I really do feel that most of these activities are too hard for kindergarten. However, it does sound like you have some very high-level kids in your room. There is reading involved in most of the activities (reading instructions and sometimes reading a sentence or paragraph), but you may be able to modify a bit. If you do decide to purchase it, and you find that it is way too difficult, please feel free to email me at shelley_gray_@hotmail.com. I will be happy to refund you :)

Have a great day,

Shelley
