This is a 20 page workbook to accompany the story "The Great Ball Game" by Joseph Bruchac. Skills covered include: author's purpose, context clues, consonant clusters, digraphs, comparing/contrasting, compound words, punctuation and quotation marks, summarizing, syllables, multiple meaning words, fact/opinion, parts of speech, synonyms/antonyms, true/false, singular and plural nouns, homophones, verb tense, analogies, vocabulary, pronouns, making connections, subject/predicate, reference materials, main idea of a page, sentence combining, correct word order in sentences, alphabetical order, spelling, suffixes, sequencing, reality/fantasy, alternate endings, character change, story elements, and cause and effect. This has been an invaluable tool in covering state standards and helping my students with comprehension and numerous language arts skills. The page numbers referenced in this workbook correspond to the story in the Houghton Mifflin® Anthology "Delights" from their California Reading program. If you are using another version of "The Great Ball Game", this will still be useful to you, but you may have to modify a few things. Hi Christie. I'm a little confused. The title of this is: The Great Ball Game Language Arts Workbook~2nd Grade~Houghton Mifflin. Was this written and created by Houghton Mifflin?

No, it was written and created by me to go with the Houghton Mifflin reading program for 2nd grade. I just put Houghton Mifflin in the title so that people will know it goes with the program. Thanks for your question!

Hi Christie, I just purchased one of your workbooks. I was curious as to how you use it in your classroom. How long does it take your students to get through the workbook? Do they do it independently?

Hello! Thanks for your purchase. At the beginning of the year, we pretty much do each section of the workbooks together, 2-3 pages a day, since most of the skills are new. As they get used to the format and understand what to do, I assign 2-3 pages a day as part of their independent seatwork while I am working with small groups. Sometimes they work individually, sometimes I will allow them to work in small groups. We always go over all answers together when they are finished. Thanks for your interest!

I have been teaching for 13 years. I taught 1st grade for three years, a 1/2 combo for one year, and 2nd grade for the last 9 years.
