Extremely detailed 70-slide PowerPoint sequence that includes historical background merged with some analysis of the novel and its characters. It seems ideal for use after students independently read the novel (for example, as summer reading). With some editing (removing info about the novel), this could be used as a pre-reading introduction to the novel.

Haley has a fifteen-year academic career teaching creative writing, most recently as associate professor of English at Mary Washington College. At the secondary level, she has served as the 11th grade American Literature teacher at Caravel Academy (DE). She has published poetry and literary criticism in a variety of journals and anthologies including Poetry, The Gettysburg Review, Reading Poetry: An Anthology of Poems; Southern Poetry Review, and Mid-American Review. Her collection of poetry, The Logic of Wings. was published by Cherry Grove Collections in 2004. Haley's Instructor's Manual for Harcourt Brace's College Division (FICTIONS: AN ANTHOLOGY OF SHORT STORIES) has been used by post-secondary instructors since 1989.
