Handouts and activities include: daily lessons, 25 Introduction to The Great Gatsby research topics, 27 worksheets, journal, essay and exit topics, assessments and projects (Whole Class, small group and individual). The lessons and activities in this dynamite unit are sure to motivate students to jump into F. Scott Fitzgerald's Roaring '20s world on Long Island's North Shore. This is a must read to coordinate with the new Gatsby movie opening in May 2013.

If you like the lessons in this unit, you might want to check out my "You are Invited" activity (http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Activity-You-are-Invited). For example purposes, but which would fit your use of this unit, I use "The Great Gatsby" to show what students should accomplish. Students love parties. Here they can use Fitzgerald's incredible novel or any that you (or they) choose. They will show their understanding of the book as well as their comprehension, writing and higher-level thinking skills as they choose and explain their choices for the guests, the food and drink, entertainment, etc. Check it out to see if it meets your needs and interest.

Because one of my goals is to prove that studying literature, writing, vocabulary and grammar can be fun, I have created a number of innovative lessons for these strands of learning. So far, I have 143 products posted in my store. In March 2013, my book, The House of Comprehension, will be published by Compass, an imprint of Brigantine Media. Based on Common Core Standards, the program and accompanying activities with Teacher Notes encourages students to construct durable houses of comprehension by combining the study of the elements of literature with any text. As for my products here, veteran teachers and those new to the field can utilize the hands on units and ideas for teaching while honing their skills on how to pace a lesson and to connect it to their state's standards of learning. I am a recently retired (2011) English teacher in the Fairfax County Virginia public school system, where I taught English 12, Journalism 1,2,3 & 4 and Creative Writing 1, 2, & 3. As a result of the Teacher Performance Evaluation instituted by the county, I was awarded the prestigious Career Two Exemplary level status three times. Besides the public high school venue, my teaching background includes an alternative secondary school for behaviorally disadvantaged adolescents, an adolescent psychiatric hospital, and a boys' reform school. Proud of my choice to be an educator, I have always hated the cliche, "Those that can, do; those that can't teach." Through my writing and my role modeling in the classroom, I show that not only do I teach, but I also practice what I preach.
