This creative writing activity is easily adaptable. I use this lesson to expand on the knowledge students already have about two-dimensional shapes. The lesson begins by sharing the book, The Greedy Triangle, by Marilyn Burns. Then the students will create a trading card of any two-dimensional shape. The back side of the card will contain "fun facts" about the shape and the front side will be an "action shot" of the shape. Once students have completed this card, the students will write a creative (narrative) story- "A Day in the Life of..." The kids will have a blast being creative and coming up with real life examples of their shapes.
This lesson includes:
- Teacher's Notes
- Geometry Terms Brainstorming Sheet
- Bio-Trading Card Planning Sheet
- Scoring Rubric for Narrative
- Student Reflection Sheet
- A Student Sample of trading card and story
- Sample Planning Sheet
