I sincerely applaud you if you choose to teach The House of Mirth. The syntax is dense and the vocabulary challenging, but the timeless theme of an inexplicable fall from grace is very well worth encouraging students to explore!
This complete 44 page package takes students step-by-step through the process of deciphering meaning, reading closely, interpreting characters, learning upper-level vocabulary and, hopefully understanding how difficult it can be to see how the best of intentions can result in disaster.
I won't lie. Many ex-students still complain to me about how tough it was to get through, but then there are those who have told me it was the best book they ever read. In either case, they remember it! Therein lies half the battle, don't you think?
