A visually engaging pre-reading PREZI presentation for introducing background, characters, symbols, and themes in Suzanne Collins' THE HUNGER GAMES, right on time to read the book with your students before the movie comes out at the end of March.

If you haven't used PREZI before, it's a web-based presentation software that allows you to created zooming productions. Instead of clicking from slide to slide like in PowerPoint, PREZI uses one large canvas and then you zoom in on individual photos, videos, or pieces of information.

In this PREZI lesson plan, students will be introduced to the following aspects of THE HUNGER GAMES:

Imagine a World - a few teasers to get students excited about the story
Background - back-story about the setting, time period, as well as the history of Panem and the Games
Author Inspiration - three separate YouTube-linked videos in which the author explains how she came up with the story
Characters - a brief description of a few main characters
Symbols - four key symbols students should pay attention to in the novel
Themes - seven key themes to watch for, with several discussion questions for each theme
Critical Acclaim - three snippets from published praises for THE HUNGER GAMES

This download will come with the PREZI presentation, a two-page study guide for students to fill out during the presentation, and a two-page teacher's guide complete with tech help for running the PREZI.

Note that PREZI requires an updated FLASH PLAYER to run. Although almost all of my customers have no problems running the PREZI file, a few (a couple out of every thousand or so) may have compatibility issues. To make sure you won't have compatibility glitches, just download one of my FREE PREZI lesson plans. If they work, this one will work too. Here are the links:

Hi Arik,

Great work! My students love The Hunger Games, so I thought I'd better get on this one. I just downloaded the Prezi, and when I get to the link that says the author will be talking about how she came up with the idea, the Prezi just stops and there is nothing there. Is there supposed to be a video link or something? Thanks! Cheryl

There is. It's a YouTube link. There are actually three of them. If it didn't load, there are a couple of troubleshooting steps you can take. The easiest fix (hopefully it's just this) is to just close the Prezi file and then open it again. Every once in a while when you open a Prezi with a YouTube clip the link will fail to load for some reason. But if you just close it and re-open it, that should fix the problem.

The other possible issue could be an internet filter. I know our school has a filter that blocks most YouTube videos (which is a little Stone Age in my mind, but that's another matter.) If that's the issue, then the fix is to ask your district web filter guru to unblock these specific URLs. In the teacher's guide, you'll find the exact URLs listed. You can just email that to your district web tech, and they can usually get it unblocked.

Hopefully one of those suggestions solves the problem for you.

Thanks for downloading! Let me know if the link continues to fail and we'll figure out another solution.
