This is a 23 page packet for teachers to use with students who are reading Beverly Cleary's book, The Mouse and the Motorcycle. Included is a 17 page student booklet designed to reinforce essential reading and writing skills for students in grades 3-5. Also included is an answer key for the teacher. Skills include understanding cause and effect, connecting to the text, expanding vocabulary, demonstrating general comprehension, explaining, summarizing, visualizing, and noticing similarities and differences. Just copy and give three staples on the left side to create student booklets. The booklet is divided into five reading assignments with questions and tasks to go with each one. It is designed for independent work so that students may be working on this in class while the teacher is meeting with another group. In my 4th grade classroom students were responsible for completing one reading assignment with the accompanying questions each week. They would be given three, 40 minute periods per week to complete one assignment. They would then meet once a week with me (or an aide or a parent), along with the other students reading the same book (we called this a book club meeting) to discuss the book and review the assignments.
What worked for me, may not be what works best for you. For example, instead of using this as class work, the packet could also be used as homework. Also, instead of creating a booklet, the pages can be copied and handed out singly as separate assignments. You might like to have readers who are more challenged by the work do partner reading and complete tasks together.
The Mouse and the Motorcycle in a nutshell:
Keith thought he was in for a boring trip with his parents until he discovered Ralph, a hotel mouse, who could talk and who loved to ride Keith's toy motorcycle. This is a delightful story of their adventures together. The book includes some challenging vocabulary.

In this packet students are given a vocabulary bookmark on which they are to write new and unusual words as they come to them in their reading. In each assignment, students are to choose two words from their bookmark and define them. So, in answer to your question, in this packet I do not provide the specific vocabulary words. Hope that answers your question!

My 20-plus years of teaching included 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades in Colorado, California, New Jersey, and Illinois. I've recently retired and now find myself as busy as ever! While I taught I loved creating meaningful and stimulating worksheets for my students, especially literature packets...but finding the time for it was always a challenge.
