I created this Spanish literature because I just received a non-English speaking student about 3 weeks ago, and I feel that while she is being immersed and learning English that way, she's missing out on being taught reading and reading skills. This study guide is to be used with the book "El ratoncito de la moto", the spanish version of "The Mouse and the Motorcycle". Due to the fact that I don't know Spanish, this literature guide is very simple, yet hopefully helpful. For every chapter, the student will fill out one page, all of which are labeled by the chapter. First, each page has 8-10 English words (that are used a lot in that chapter (of the English version)). They will rewrite the English word, then look up the word in a Spanish-English dictionary and write the Spanish equivilant. They will do this with each word. Next there is a very simple story element chart for them to fill out with the characters (who), Setting (where & when) and plot (what). They are allowed to write this portion in Spanish. You will notice that every page has exactly the same set-up and directions. This is to help the student build familiarity with the words, directions and task. In the beginning of the guide, the directions appear in Spanish & English, with the spanish being first. As the guide continues, the English directions become listed first and the spanish directions second. For the last few chapters of the guide, the Spanish directions have disappeared. I also designed this project (for my ESOL student)so that after she reads a chapter (in Spanish)and completes the worksheet, I will have another student (or myself) go over the vocab words with her, giving her a chance to hear and say them. She will then listen to that same chapter of the book in English on a CD (or another student will read to her)so that she can begin recignizing the vocab words and begin making connections between what she read in Spanish and what she hears in English.
**Like I said, I do not claim to know Spanish, so I apologize with the spanish translation is not perfect. I tried to keep it very simple. This was designed for the sole purpose of helping a Spanish speaking student learn and become familar with English, while at the same time practice reading & related skills in their own language. It's also something that she can work on when we are working on something in class or for homework that she simply can't do with us.If you have any questions or suggestions, please let me know:)
