This unit is designed to accompany The Nutcracker Ballet, a Step into Reading, Step 3 book written by Deborah Hautzig and illustrated by Carolyn Ewing. This delightful retelling of the classic Christmas story is written for the developing second grade reader. The first worksheet presents vocabulary words that will be found in the book and asks the student to rate their knowledge of them both before and after reading. After looking at these words and viewing the pictures in the book, the child predicts what he/she thinks will happen in the story. The next two worksheets require the reader to recall the order of the dances performed for Marie and the correct order of the story's main events respectively. The final page in this unit asks the students to record their impressions of the story and then find another student with whom they can discuss their feelings. This is a complete unit that carries the reader through the entire reading process. An answer key in included in the download.

My 2nd graders go see this ballet every year. This is one of the books I read to them and was hoping for activities to go with it. I was disappointed with this purchase.

I taught for a total of 32 years, mostly in second grade. After getting my Masters in special education, I spent 5 years as an LD Resource teacher before returning to the regular classroom. I have taught third grade and a multi-age primary class as well.
