No offense, S. E. Hinton: THE OUTSIDERS is a great book, but, boy, the cliches! The cliches in this puzzle have one word missing, which students must supply. Example: It would have been a good excuse to cut him to _____. (RIBBONS) Good activity for teaching about cliches!
Hi, Jim,
Thanks for the compliment. I wasn't sure how teachers would react to a product that points out Hinton's writing weaknesses. As teachers, though, we tend to direct students only to writing of the highest caliber, and I thought it would be instructive to show students that, while Hinton has written a wonderful story, her writing at that point was immature (and should be since she was so young), making the point that writers, too, go through stages, while at the same time showing how cliches can weaken writing.
Thanks for taking the time to comment; I really appreciate it. Hope your school year is going well.
