PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is everything you need to implement the "Reader's Treasury" in your classroom. This packet will give you a simple plan to ensure that your students will continue reading these emergent readers well after they are sent home - and even in years to come!

You will receive: a teacher's guide for creating a Reader's Treasury system, Reader's Treasury stickers, a parent letter, printables for five powerful and exciting emergent readers, and guides on creating these books with your students.

This has been an extremely successful component of my classroom as I work to build young readers. I asked some former students' parents for feedback. This is what they said:

My son still two years later goes to that box, pulls out his books, and reads them - to his sister, to me, to anyone who will listen. He excelled more than I could have imagined in kindergarten.
~Kim Simms

We loved the readers treasury books!  From decorating our collection box to filling it up. Each book was so creatively done and educational all at the same time.  What a great way for kindergarteners to learn and grow throughout the year!
~Betsy Lord

Lexi loved the Reader's Treasury box!  The day you told the class about creating the "Treasury Box", Lexi came home off the bus with only one thing on her mind - creating the box!  She was so excited to find a box and decorate it.  She didn't even want help.  She wanted it to be her own special creation!  Two books in particular were were favorites.  She always chose those when we went to her brothers' basketball games.  She shared them with her friend who is 2 years younger and she was very intrigued with the books as well.  The different colors on the noses and the "removable pieces" of the noses were very exciting to them.  She really liked to hear herself reading the books aloud.
~Kim Chilton

With one simple homework assignment, your class made books can have incredible impact. Enjoy!

I'm very anxious to try this! I think it's a great way to foster parental involvement besides helping kinders as they learn to read.

I look forward to using your Readers Treasury idea with my kinders. I love the ideas! Have you ever had them decorate boxes in class? Are shoe boxes large enough?
On  July 28, 2013Karen Langdon answered:
Great! No, I have never had them decorate in class. You certainly could, but I find that they personalize them more when they do them at home. For example, one child put Red Wings photos all over his, another put photos of her family, and another put copies of the front covers of his favorite books. I would not have had those type of things available in class for them. However, I think they would still be special. The size depends on the types of books you make. I often have the kids do books that are a full sheet of paper. Those would not fit well in a shoe box, but a pizza box or boot box would be great. If you typically do half size things, a shoe box would be fine. For the books included in this product, a shoe box would work well. Have fun!
