Use the Simpsons to engage students while introducing or re-inforcing lessons on the 1920s and prohibition.

This is one of my favourite lessons "add-ons" and the kids love it too! This file contains questions and an answer sheet for the Simpsons' episode "Homer vs The Eighteenth Ammendment" (Simpsons season 8, episode 18) The questions deal with specifics of government, how people circumvented the law, communication of the time, etc.

When Prohibition hits the town of Springfield Homer goes into the booze making business.
The whole episode is 1920s inspired with telegraph, rallies calling for prohibition, speakeasies, a "beer baron" and a gumshoe out to make a name for himself.

It is one of the best Simpsons episodes and has clear connections to be made with the Roarin' 20s and highlights many of the issues that arose around the idea of prohibition.

I generally have the students watch the episode (roughly 24 minutes, available on DVD, or download if you are into that) and either answer the questions as they are viewing or, if I have time, view it a second time to answer the questions.
