The Scarlet Letter: Very Difficult Quizzes on Chapters 7-12

These are very, very difficult quizzes. They are intended for IB and AP-level study. They are intended for intensive literary study and presume close reading and intimate knowledge of the text. By necessity, some literal-level questions are included in each quiz, but the questions are mostly at highly interpretive levels.

My goal is to force students to read with an eye toward narrative stance, symbolic language, ambiguous language, use of imagery, authorial intent, and use of motif. Some of the items might not be aimed at what you want your students to get from selected chapters, but the questions are valid nonetheless. Please take a close look at the samples to ensure these the types of quiz you want to use or adapt. They are not your garden-variety quizzes and represent a significant amount of time and effort.

The quizzes are intended to check whether or not students read a given chapter. They are primarily intended to initiate discussion on important aspects of each chapter. My goal was to use the quizzes as a starting point to review important literary features in each chapter: If I could use the quiz as the primary tool to review each chapter, it was kept. There is no substitute for the book and specific references to it, but the aim was to use each quiz as a primary review tool.

In this document you will find six multiple-choice quizzes on chapters 7-12. Each quiz comprises ten questions except for Ch. 12, The Minister's Vigil: It contains 15 questions since there is more going on in that chapter than the previous five. Answers are, of course, provided. I used the ubiquitous Times New Roman font and made this a .doc document to ensure everyone can use it. Each quiz (except for Ch. 12) is intended to be doubled--two on a page. It is always nice to save paper. Tabs were used and formatting is consistent to help users modify quizzes easily.
