Your students will love learning about subjects, predicates, and sentences with this adorable themed file folder game, The Sentence Bowl. The theme is football and is carried through the entire center in full color. You'll love students' improved grammar and writing skills and the preparation for standardized testing.

Students read cards containing phrases and identify the phrase as a subject or predicate. End punctuation and capitalization are removed to make it more challenging. After sorting all of the cards, students simply turn the cards in each stack over and unscramble a picture puzzle to see if they have sorted correctly. Subjects and predicates are then combined to form sentences, which are recorded on a recording sheet that can be easily graded if you so choose. There are plenty of opportunities for students to build silly sentences to keep it fun.

This is my most detailed file folder game yet! The 15-page download includes a cover, teacher and student directions, a 2-page game board, and 2 sets of 24 game cards each (48 cards in all), all pieces full-color, as well as a blackline master of the recording sheet. Copy picture puzzles (included) onto the backs of the game cards to allow students to self-check. The picture puzzles are in grayscale to discourage students from trying to assemble the puzzles by color without sorting out the subjects and predicates first. The cards are also included in a separate, editable Microsoft Publisher (.pub) file if you want to personalize them with your own questions!

Simply assemble the game and you will have a great activity for individuals, small groups, or for centers. Since it is a digital file, you can make as many as you like--even send a set home without worrying that you will lose your only copy of the center!

If you like the game, please leave feedback and check out my other products. I have several file folder games in my catalog, including Author's Porpoise and a Cause and Effect game called Down on the Farm. Have a great idea for a similar resource? Email me at the address below!

Please do not copy this game for an entire grade level or school. If your colleagues like the game, please send them to Teachers Pay Teachers!

Thank you!

Hi! I downloaded this, but I am having trouble opening the pub file/cards. I think I need Microsoft Publisher, but I don't have it. Is there any other way to get this? I am very excited about using this wonderfully executed game with my third graders.

Hi there! You can still use the PDF file with the ready-made cards. You have a full version of the game in the PDF. I found this link that had info about downloading a free trial of Publisher. Perhaps that would help you with the customizable cards. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher-help/where-is-the-publisher-viewer-HA010233906.aspx

I am trying to download the game. I am able to open the part called sentence bowl PDF. Then there is the art called football cards only.pub. What program do I need to open this or is it included in the first part?
Thank you

That is a Microsoft Publisher file. You don't have to have that to use the game. It just allows you to customize the cards with text of your choice.

Subject Area:

I have been a public school teacher in a highly respected district in the Atlanta metro area for the past 12 years. I have taught very diverse students, usually all together in one group! After teaching fourth grade for ten years, I am now teaching a computer lab special to 3 and 4 year olds, and loving it! I am also the technology coordinator for my public, special needs school. You never know what changes life will bring!
