UNIT: Properties of Water
STANDARDS (NYC Science Scope & Sequence 2008):
• Describe the Water Cycle (PS 2.1c, LE 6.2c)
• Examine and describe the transformation of matter from one state to another, e.g., solid water (ice) to liquid (water) to gas (water vapor) (PS 3.2 a,b)
• Water is recycled by natural processes on earth, Precipitation, Evaporation, etc. (PS 3.2 a,b),
• Predict and investigate the effect of heat energy on objects and materials. (e.g., change in temperature, melting, evaporation) (PS 2.1c, PS 3.2b,c PS 4.1d)
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to show understanding of the concepts of evaporation, condensation and precipitation as well as identify and define them through observation and experimentation.
AIM: What are the main parts of the water cycle and what characteristics define each?
MATERIALS: Notebooks, pencils, folders, mirror, hot water, cold water, ice, hot plate, pot with cover, oven mitts, paper towels, water cycle chart, station directions, etc.
