This lesson focuses on interpreting and analyzing Longfellow's "The Wreck of the Hesperus" through the use of literature circles. Students read the poem, analyze and interpret examples of figurative language and form opinions on the main character. The students work in groups of four to discuss the poem, create a storyboard illustration to present to the class and formulate answers to questions focusing on analyzing and interpreting the poem. This plan is seven pages long. It includes the lesson plan, task assignment sheet (job descriptions), task worksheet (two pages) and a simple rubric (points-based).
