This activity is part of a multi-activity set that can be combined with others or used independently to help teach students about the structure of DNA. Students work with molecular structure models, derived by researchers from experimental data, to identify the components of the four nucleotides found in DNA.

In the activity, students identify the parts of a nucleotide in both a three-dimensional structure and a two-dimensional drawing. This activity is appropriate for any class where students learn about the structure of DNA including biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, genetics, cell biology, microbiology, molecular biology, and more.

This version is for Mac OS X. This package includes the molecular modeling program (Cn3D), annotated structures, instructions, a worksheet, and an answer key.

To get an idea how this activity works, check out this free movie on using Cn3D.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Grades Taught:
Subject Area:

My teaching experience began when I found myself director of a biotechnology training program at Seattle Central Community College in the early 90's. Since there wasn't any curriculum available, I wrote all the biotechnology lab manuals and taught courses in genetics, immunology, media and solution preparation, biotech lab courses, and microbiology.

Today, I have my own company, Digital World Biology. We produce free tutorials on using bioinformatics, offer professional development for teachers in bioinformatics, and develop instructional materials.

I also teach an on-line course in bioinformatics for Austen Community College in Texas and another bioinformatics course at Shoreline Community College in Washington State.

I write about science and teaching at ScienceBlogs. My blog is Discovering Biology in a Digital World.
