I love teaching multiplication.
We kick off the unit by focusing on THINGS THAT COME IN GROUPS.
It really helps the students visualize the concepts behind multiplication and prepares them to learn their facts.
I created this resource to enhance our math curriculum.
Students brainstorm things that come in groups of different numbers:
Example:
2 - mittens, shoes, earrings, nostrils
3 - sides on a triangle, wheels on a tricycle
4- bases on a baseball field, vertices on a quadtrilateral
etc.
The students use these to write and solve word problems.
The packet includes:
Table of Contents
things that come in groups small charts ........................ 4
Includes:
full color chart
blackline reproducible (great for homework or group brainstorming)
word problem template ......................................................... 6
This format helps students start to visualize the concepts behind multiplication. The pages make great class books or bulletin board displays. I've had students illustrate problems and have also used actual photos of students with groups of objects.
For example: Avery has 2 cans of tennis balls. Each can has 3 balls. There are 6 balls in all. 2x3=6
whole class chart / bulletin board ..................................... 7
Use the color printables to create a resource chart with your class about things that come in groups. We reference this to create and solve word problems throughout our multiplication unit.
