Unit Objective: The students in my third grade math class will learn about the importance of graphs in their everyday lives. They will learn about the different places that graphs can be found as well as about the various functions and purposes of graphs. The children will work through various activities, individually, as well as in group settings to learn about how to collect and organize data to create accurate pictographs. The children, at the conclusion of this lesson will be able to analyze data represented in pictographs, and accurately interpret their results.

Daily Objectives:

Day 1:
•The students will be able to identify the purposes of graphs, where they can be found, and the different types of graphs that can be used to represent data sets.

•The students will be able to explain and distinguish between the terms data, bar graph, line plot, pictograph and circle graphs.

•The students will be able to identify the important parts and labels that make up a graph.

Day 2 and 3:
•The students will be able to collect data from their classmates and create a pictograph to represent their findings/data accurately.
•The students will be able to create their own pictographs with the appropriate title and labels.
•The students will be able to read and interpret pictographs accurately.

Day 4:
•The students will work in groups to compile and organize data into a pictograph. The students will label their graph with the appropriate labels, key and title.
•The students will create an accurate pictograph where symbols in the graph are equal to equal more than one unit.
•The students will be able to read and interpret pictographs accurately.

Day 5 and 6:
•The students will be able to create and conduct their own survey of their classmates.
•The students will be able to collect data using observations /surveys and represent their data accurately on a pictograph.

Day 7:
•The students will be able to accurately present their collected data, from their surveys, to their classmates visually on their pictograph poster.
•The students will be able to make sense of their findings and explain their conclusions from their individual pictograph survey to the class.
